LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People are stealing dogs from the shelter in Henry and Trimble counties. Now staff members are pleading for the community's help to build a fence.
That fence will protect dogs like Nova. The sweet six-year-old Pitbull mix came to Henry Trimble Country Animal Services in 2019. While staff members hoped that would be the end of Nova's shelter days, she came back five years later.
"She came back in pretty rough shape. She has no teeth. She is just have a lot of anxiety," said Danielle Ashcraft, director of Henry County Animal Control.
Since she has no bottom teeth, the shelter asked the community for wet dog food donations. People stepped up - far beyond the staff's expectations sharing a huge stockpile of canned dog food.
"It brought us almost to tears because of how amazing it was -- the outpouring of support we received," Ashcraft said.
Now, they're hoping the community steps in again.
Staff members said thieves have stolen several shelter dogs from their outside kennels. "One did not end too well. It actually ended with a severe animal abuse case," Ashcraft said.
The shelter hopes to build a fence to protect the pups. Ashcraft said whoever funds it, gets to advertise their business.
"Anybody who's gong to the dump, landfill, or driving by will see it -- as well as when they're coming in," she said.
Putting up a fence around the facility will cost an estimated $45,000. Henry and Trimble counties have pledged $30,000 combined, so the shelter is offering a deal to local businesses and supporters. A $400 donation gets a sign prominently displayed. Until the fence is up, the dogs need to stay protected.
"Being cooped up in a kennel all day. No dog deserves that. It's not a quality of life for dogs," Ashcraft said. She hopes to raise the funds before the end of summer, so dogs like Nova can run free and stay safe.
Anyone interested in contributing to the project it must clearly mark donations for "Animal Services Fence Project." Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Henry Trimble Animal Shelter. The address is 9213 Sulphur Road, Sulphur, KY 40076.
The shelter also has a Facebook page, which is used primarily to reunite lost pets with their owners. Click here.
