LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — Dozens of animals rescued from a Jefferson County property Monday have been placed in foster homes, according to Louisville Metro Animal Services.

LMAS said in a social media video it rescued 41 animals, including 38 dogs, from a Jefferson County property Monday after they were found in conditions the shelter described as "rough" and unsanitary.

The shelter said it was already at capacity before taking the animals in, and said the recent rescue put the shelter in a "dire situation."

"What we need from our community right now is fosters," Stephanie Jackson, a spokesperson for LMAS, said Monday. "We need fosters to show up to our shelters right now, today, tomorrow and the next day."

In a update Tuesday, Jackson confirmed at least two dozen of the rescued animals have already been placed in temporary foster placements after receiving medical treatment, grooming and a lot of food and rest.

One of the dogs is recovering from surgery in Louisville, while another was sent for emergency medical treatment in another part of Kentucky, LMAS said.

"I didn’t get much sleep last night because it just keeps running through your head, you know, like, how did this happen?" Jackson said Tuesday. "...But it feels good to hold this little guy, and to know that he’s going to get the care that he needs."

LMAS said it cannot confirm the address of the property or the owners of the rescued animals while the investigation is ongoing. However, Jackson did say humane agents were back on the property Tuesday to rescue additional dogs and cats that were still believed to be roaming freely at the same address.

The shelter also said that while many of the dogs will remain in foster care for now, some may eventually be available for permanent adoption. Click here for more information.
