LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky's new driver licensing system has been in place for two months, and drivers are seeing changes both online and at regional offices.
In June, KYTC introduced a new licensing system and online portal designed to reduce wait times and expand online services. Offices shut down for a few days.
The transition was part of the launch of the state's new myDrive portal and the Kentucky Information Network for Driver Licensing, known as KINDL. State officials said the updated system replaced a decades-old platform.
"We wanted this new system to improve customer service for constituents as well as improve efficiencies internally," said Naitore Djigbenou, spokesperson for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
For some drivers, the system has done just that.
Arreyon Boyd showed up to the Louisville Bowman Field Driver Licensing Regional Office for a temporary ID Thursday morning.
"I start work in like 2 days, so I need it," Boyd said.
It was his first time visiting a Kentucky Driver Licensing Regional Office, and he didn't know what to expect. He assumed he'd need to wait at least an hour.
To his surprise, he was in and out in less than 15 minutes.
"It was pretty fast. I feel good," Boyd said. "I don't have to worry about it any more."
With the new system, Kentuckians can now apply online for licenses and permits. They can also request replacement cards and update addresses without visiting in-person.
Immediately after the change, there were complaints as the offices worked out the kinks.
"We had closed down offices to do the migration," Djigbenou said. "We had some state holidays in the mix, and so when those offices reopened, we did see a temporary spike in foot traffic. But that has all stabilized."
There are still people that are having trouble adjusting to the changes
Adam Logson said he got confused by the online options while making an appointment last month. He said staff couldn't solve his issue Thursday and told him to reschedule.
"It's another hassle, coming back," Logsdon said. "Another month. I'm just trying to get my license."
However, Djigbenou said, for the most part, people are getting the help they need within 10 to 13 minutes.
"We have been really pleased with how it's been going," she said. "We've had at least 3,000 people save a trip to an in-person visit to one of our offices."
Even if you don't need to renew your ID anytime soon, Djigbenou suggests making a myDrive account now. There are verification steps that could take a few days.
