CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Sparks were flying Tuesday as Duke Energy workers demonstrated how to stay safe around live high-voltage power lines.
The utility held live-line demonstrations for both emergency responders and highway maintenance workers in Clark and Floyd counties.Â
Line crews recreated live-voltage scenarios, complete with bangs, pops and flashes using an open utility trailer equipped with two transformers connected by a primary wire.
People who attended the demonstrations learned about the precautions that need to be taken around live high-voltage wires.
"It's a great opportunity when the real situation isn't out there," said Lisa Huber with Duke Energy. "We got this opportunity to simulate that so they can see what happens when actually you hear a noise or see the sparks fly that you know what's going on."
Officials said the main thing for the public to know is to never go near a downed power line. If you encounter a downed line, contact your electric company.
