LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Students in Bullitt County Public Schools are back in the classroom.
BCPS leaders said it was typical first day growing pains Tuesday morning, students and teachers making their way back to school and back into their routines.
There are some changes for the district including growth.
BCPS has more than 13,000 students enrolled this year. That number is rising, and construction is underway to give those students more room.
Last year, the district started a $20 million project to build a new school addition between Bullitt East High School and the former Old Mill Elementary School. Lucky for students, Bullitt East High School Assistant Principal Mike Brankers said crews completed the new parking lot at the back of campus in time for the start of school.
"We are definitely crowded," Brankers said Tuesday. "We're getting close to 1,700 students, so moving around building during the day is difficult for students. So as we get bigger, it will spread students out more."
Junior Maggy Inmon doesn't mind the changes.
"The football field is definitely different," Inmon said Tuesday. "Last year, the whole first part of the year it was under construction, so it's nice coming back having the new field and parking lot. It looks nice."
The ongoing construction did create some car rider line backups, which the district plans to fix by the end of the week.
As they navigate these changes, BCPS also wants parents to download the Bullitt County Public Schools app, which will allow teachers to communicate directly with parents. You can find a link to download it on the district home page, click here.
Bullitt County Schools reported every student who rode a bus was dropped off by 5:30 p.m.
