SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) - Bullitt County Public Schools has named Michael Huffman as the first police chief for the district’s newly established police department.
Chief Huffman, a Bullitt native, brings 28 years of law enforcement experience to the job. He most recently served as Lieutenant Colonel with the Mt. Washington Police Department.
This appointment marks a homecoming for Huffman, whose deep roots in the district include having previously served as a School Resource Officer at Bullitt Lick Middle, Roby Elementary, and Shepherdsville Elementary.
As Chief of Police, Huffman’s primary initiatives will focus on:
- Community Relations: Fostering positive, supportive relationships between district law enforcement officers, school staff, and students.
- Emergency Preparedness: Enhancing and strengthening safety protocols and emergency preparedness across all BCPS facilities.
- Safe Learning Environments: Ensuring secure and supportive environments conducive to student learning across the district.
“Chief Huffman has dedicated his entire career to protecting and serving this community,” BCPS said in a statement welcoming him to his new leadership role.
The appointment of Chief Huffman is a pivotal milestone in the launch of the Bullitt County Public Schools Police Department.
The district’s school board agreed on the establishment of an internal police agency in January 2026. The board tentatively allocated $538,451 in May 2026 to fund the first phase. The initial budget is slated to cover personnel salaries, training, and equipment, including uniforms, computers, patrol vehicles, and weaponry.
Currently, the district, which includes 22 schools, utilizes 10 SROs. The internal police department operates with full law enforcement and arresting authority.
The launch of the BCPS police department coincides with other safety measures implemented for the 2026–2027 school year, including the districtwide rollout of AI-powered weapon detection systems.
