LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A 4-year-old died Tuesday afternoon in Jennings County, Indiana, after a tree fell on a home.
According to Cody Low, Chief Deputy of the Jennings County Sheriff's Office, emergency officials were dispatched around 3:25 p.m. to reports of a tree that had fallen on a home in Geneva Township. That's about one and a half miles northwest of North Vernon.
First responders were also told before arriving that a child may be injured or trapped inside the home.
When crews arrived, they found a tree had fallen onto a back bedroom of the home. A 4-year-old child was found inside and pronounced dead at the scene.
Low said three other people were inside the home when the tree fell. They were able to get out without injuries.
Several trees fell across Jennings County on Tuesday, according to Low. Another tree fell on a home a few miles away, but no one was injured.
"This is obviously unexpected. It's a bad situation," Low said. "...We're going to push through this as a community, back the family in any way they need."
The investigation is ongoing. Low said strong winds and storms that moved through the county earlier Tuesday likely caused the tree to fall.
