LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Summer break is officially over for thousands of students in Bullitt County.
Bullitt County Public Schools welcomed students back to the classroom Wednesday for the first day of the 2026-27 school year.
WDRB's Samantha Condra spent the morning in Bullitt County as students, teachers and staff settled back into their routines and kicked off another school year.
The new year comes with some changes across the district, including an increased focus on school safety. BCPS is adding weapon detection systems at all three of its high schools — Bullitt Central, Bullitt East and North Bullitt — for the 2026-27 school year. The systems are designed to screen students and visitors as they enter the buildings.
The district said the weapon detection system went smoothly at the high schools, and kids got through in about 20 minutes.
The district is also working to establish its own police department. Superintendent Jesse Bacon previously said the district's long-term goal is to have a school resource officer in every school. BCPS has 22 schools and had 10 school resource officers as of May.
The district planned to hire a police chief and two additional school resource officers as part of the new department, while continuing to work with local law enforcement agencies that already provide officers to schools.
Wednesday marked the beginning of another busy year for Bullitt County families, with students now back in classrooms across the district.
