LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville elementary school was nationally recognized for its focus on kindness.
Carter Traditional Elementary, located in the Parkland neighborhood, received a Kind School designation this month from Teach Kindness. The national organization recognizes schools that make kindness a schoolwide priority.
For a school to earn the designation, it must create a schoolwide definition of kindness in collaboration with students, and then implement the practice throughout the school.
Carter student Mackenzye Ramsey said their counselor, Kim Finnell, comes to classrooms every month and chooses a kindness word for students to focus on.
"We talk about the word, we show what it means and the whole month throughout we practice that word," Ramsey said.
Brandi Watts, director of Teach Kindness, emphasized the importance of these practices in setting children up for success.
"These young people are going to be our future very soon and so whatever skills we want them to be able to display and implement, we have to teach them now," Watts said.
Carter is one of 32 schools nationwide to earn the designation this year.
