LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A duPont Manual High School student is sending medical aid to India with the help of a Louisville nonprofit.
Prisha Hedau, a freshman, has been sending funding to an orphanage in her mother's hometown in India for the past seven years. Hedau became SOS International's first Global Student Ambassador and she's launching a student-led initiative to help marginalized people in Nagpur, according to a news release.
SOS is a health equity nonprofit based in Louisville that supports communities around the world with resources.
Hedau visited her mother's hometown in India when she was seven years old. Since then, she has raised and donated money every year for her birthday. She decided to expand her efforts by raising funding for a custom box of medical supplies.
"The idea that if we can't be there in-person at least we can do our best to put a smile on someone's face, to save a baby's life, to help a mother, that really warms my heart," Hedau said. "I wanted to make sure I am continuing of global health equity and being part of the greater good."
On Saturday, Hedau, her parents, students from Manual, Ballard High School and Meyzeek Middle SChhool sorted, prepared and packed items for a shipment to India. According to a news release, the medical supplies will be delivered to Matru Sewa Sangh, an NGO working to provide affordable health care facilities for marginalized people in Nagpur.Â
"We are thrilled to appoint Prisha as our first student ambassador," Denise Sears, CEO & President of SOS International, said in a news release. "Our Local Education program is aimed at inspiring and educating the next generation of global citizens, and Prisha exemplifies the qualities of a young global humanitarian. We are excited to support her philanthropic work and believe that she will inspire other young people to embrace our mission and spark real change in the world."
