LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools is getting good grades for energy efficiency.
The school district in Louisville partnered with Louisville Gas and Electric to make school buildings more energy efficient. LG&E provides continuous electrical and natural gas needs at 170 schools and campus buildings for JCPS.
LG&E's Business Rebates program gave JCPS $127,000 for improvements this year. According to a news release, JCPS has received more than $1 million in rebates since 2011 for installing energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems in its new and older schools.
"When we walk out of here we are not dependent on someone to turn off the lights, they automatically cut the lights off and that is a huge savings for our schools and our districts," JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said.

The Academy @ Shawnee underwent a major renovation three years ago, which included installation of a new energy efficient HVAC system, lighting and windows.
JCPS recently completed major investment projects at eight schools, including improved lighting, reductions in operating costs and lower overall energy usage. The Academy @ Shawnee, Ahrens Educational Resource Center, Echo Trail Middle School, Hazelwood Elementary, Indian Trail Elementary, Perry Elementary, Western Middle School for the Arts and Wilkerson Elementary.
