LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools is stocking up on meals after running out last week.
The district launched it's summer meals program on May 27, offering free ready-to-eat lunches for children 18 and younger across the Louisville area.
"It's a lot easier for the parents," Leslie Lovelace said at a distribution site. "They don't have to think about what they're going to feed them."
Meals are available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at participating schools, parks and enrichment sites. Parents and guardians can also pick up meals for children during distribution hours.
On Friday, May 29, the district ran out of bulk meal boxes. JCPS' Nutrition Services Executive Administrator Terina Edington said moving forward, they have enough food to meet the need.
"We increased the number of meals that we've prepared, so we are ready going forward," Edington said.
JCPS is also expanding the program with weekly meal box pickups beginning Friday at three locations:
- Echo Trail Middle School
- Evangel World Prayer Center
- PRP Fire Training Center
Each meal box includes seven breakfasts and seven lunches.
"They're really good, and I know the kids like them," Lovelace said. "It's well worth the trip."
The district’s summer meals program will continue through July 24. The U.S. Department of Agriculture picks up the tab, so this program doesn't cost JCPS a dime.
"If a parent allows their child to participate, it does not take a resource away from another family," Edington said.
