LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools parents holding out for the district to restore some magnet and traditional school bus routes will have to keep waiting.

During Tuesday's Jefferson County Board of Education meeting Tuesday evening, leaders said the district needs more TARC drivers certified to drive a school bus before routes can be restored.

The district said it would restore transportation for students at Male, Manual and Butler on free or reduced lunch, all students at Johnson Traditional Middle School, and students at Coleridge Taylor and Young elementary schools.

Route restoration is dependent on the number of TARC drivers that become certified to drive a school bus.Ā The former public transit driversĀ are expected to transition over to JCPS,Ā a deal worked out between the school district and city's public transit system, as TARC deals with a financial crisis. The drivers otherwise risked being laid off.

JCPS needs 60 TARC drivers to get the proper certification. As of now, the district is at 31.

"It's difficult to say what a timeline will be now, but we've got to get 60 drivers to add back routes," Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said.Ā

Pollio had originally hoped to have routes restored the day after fall break, but said drivers are still testing to get the required certification.
