LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — As school districts across the area start their summer break, they're making sure kids still get fed while they're out of class.
All local school districts are offering summer meal programs.
In Hardin County, their message to parents this summer is "come get the food."
"You don't have to be a Hardin County Schools student," said John Wright, a spokesperson for the district. "Any homeschool child from another district or even a child who's not in school yet can receive a meal."
This summer, the cafeteria moves outdoors in Hardin County, where the district's summer meal program starts June 3.
"Just as long as they're 18 years or younger," Wright said.
Breakfast and lunch will be available for all kids 18 years and younger.
Wright says for some kids, school breakfast and lunch may be two of the only meals they get for the day.
"We do what we can when we have them," he said. "They need that extra, who may question where a next meal may come from."
Each weekday, parents and their kids can meet at one of the on-site locations below to sit and have a meal:
- Hardin County Farmer’s Market in Elizabethtown (every Wednesday in June and July)
- Dawley Park in Radcliff on the following dates:
- June 3, 4, 5
- M-F the week of June 15
- M-Thursday the week of June 29 (no lunches on July 3 – Independence Day Holiday)
- M-F the week of July 13
- July 27, 28 and 29
- Optimist Park in Vine Grove on the following dates:
- M-F the week of June 8
- M-F the week of June 22
- M-F the week of July 6
- M-F the week of July 20
"No questions are asked," said Wright. "You're not being asked how much money you make."
Parents can also choose to go to any one of four locations on Wednesdays through June and July to pick up five to-go breakfast and lunch meals for the week, but they have to register online first.
"I just hope that our parents realize that this is a resource, and no matter how much money you're making, or what things are like at home, those meals are ready for you," Wright said. "It's for those who have and those who may be struggling."
