LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A group of Louisville barbers is trading price tags for purpose by offering free back-to-school haircuts for students in need.
Barber Kings Classic Styles, located in the Newburg neighborhood, is teaming up with Newburg Church of Christ to host the annual event Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Haircuts are free for students up to age 18, regardless of race, background or church affiliation. Girls' haircuts will also be offered this year, thanks to the addition of a local stylist.
"This will be our fourth year," said Edie Gildon, one of the barbers volunteering her time. "We love to give back. We want them to have that confidence when they start back school."
Edie and her husband, master barber Larron Gildon, have been cutting hair in the community for decades. They say the event isn’t just about appearance — it's about dignity and support.
"I always wanted to help my community out and do things the right way in the neighborhood to help the children and families," said Larron Gildon.
The event also includes a school supply giveaway. Local business owners — including sponsors from the Sky Soul Festival — are donating 50 backpacks filled with supplies.
"We know that it’s hard for some of the parents to get their kids everything they need," said Shannon Pearson with Newburg Church of Christ. "So, this year we’re actually going to do backpacks with supplies in them. That’s an added bonus."
Organizers stress that the event is open to everyone — not just members of the church.
"It’s for anyone who can get here," Pearson said. "That’s all we care about. Just get here."
No registration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The barbers say they hope to keep the tradition going in years to come.
"No doubt — without a doubt," said Larron Gildon. "Lord willing, yeah, we’ll be doing the same thing next year."
