LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An early childhood education school in the California neighborhood has a new natural classroom.
New Directions' St. Benedict Center for Early Childhood Education unveiled a new natural classroom on Saturday designed to enrich its students and families. The classroom was funded by a $100,000 grant from the PNC Foundation.
"This transformative grant is enabling us to expand our current offerings and create an immersive outdoor learning environment where children can develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world," Felicia Alfred, St. Benedict Center director, said in a news release. "We thank PNC Foundation for its support and commitment to empowering the next generation with knowledge and a love of nature and exploration."
According to a news release, research shows that play has the power to stimulate the mind, strengthen the body and help children develop problem-solving skills and cooperation. It also encourages social interaction.
The grant by PNC Foundation allowed St. Benedict Center to expand its natural playground into a comprehensive outdoor classroom. Teachers and staff will undergo specialized training and certification to teach outdoor learning experiences.Â
"This innovative space goes beyond four walls, immersing our young learners in a world of discovery and wonder. It will make a difference in their ability to reach their academic potential," Lori Hudson Flanery, New Directions president and CEO, said in a news release.
