LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some Jefferson County Public Schools students learned when life gives you lemons, you make a career out of it.
More than 150 juniors and seniors at the Academy @ Shawnee participated in the annual "Shawnee in Power" day on Wednesday.
Students heard from authors, fashion designers, DJs, and a lemonade business owner. They also got advice, on topics ranging from how to change a flat tire, to healthy lifestyle choices.
"We have to take them out of the traditional classroom setting and make sure that they have experiences so they can make positive choices for themselves moving forward," teacher Jaime Whitaker said. "This is high school, and it's our job to make sure these kids are ready for the rest of their lives."
Students could chat with at least five of the 19 Louisville business, community, and health leaders at the help sessions.
The organizer of the event hopes to have more Shawnee empowerment sessions soon.
