LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana school superintendent is holding a fundraiser to allow students some extra sleep if they want to stay up and watch Indiana football in the national championship.
According to a news release Monday, Lanesville Community School Corporation Superintendent Ryan Apple was asked by a parent if students could have a two-hour delay to stay up and watch the big game.
Apple then came up with the idea: If the school system can raise $1,820 for Riley Children’s Hospital, students will be given a two-hour delay Tuesday, Jan. 20.
"What better way to celebrate something that none of us ever thought would happen, a miracle if you will, than to help provide some miracles for some kids in our very own state," Apple said in a news release.
Money can be donated at any office or through classroom teachers. High school students can also donate during lunch, in the morning or after school in the office jar.
Community members can stop by an office to donate or donate at sporting events this week.
The last chance to donate will be at the boys' high school basketball game Saturday, Jan. 17.
Apple said if the two-hour delay impacts parents' work schedules, he's willing to watch kids in the high school gym from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Tuesday if the money is raised.
"I don't want some logistics to take away from our students, staff, parents and community being able to have a fun time while doing something really good for some really needy kids of the Hoosier State," Apple said in a news release. "Let's see what good we can do for some really needy and really sick kids in our state and show everyone, once again, that little communities and schools can do really big and great things."
Indiana football will face the Miami Hurricanes on Monday, Jan. 19, in Miami for the national championship. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. WDRB will have coverage leading up to kickoff and from Miami at the game.
