LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Local emergency officials said drownings are up this year.
That's the reason crews with Anchorage-Middletown Fire and EMS teamed up with the U.S. Coast Guard to collect life jackets on Thursday outside Captains Quarters.
The department plans to put those donated life jackets in stands throughout the area near the Ohio River.
Spokesperson Jordan Yuodis said people will be able to borrow the floatation devices while they're out on the water.
"The signs clearly say if you can return it, return it. But if you forget, if we're out $15 or $20 for a life jacket, and it potentially saved somebody's life. We with our partnering agencies and will replace the life jacket. We can't replace a life, but we can replace a life jacket," he said.
Crews refill the stands when they get low.
