LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A pair of Louisville EMTs are still on medical leave, four months after a crash on River Road.

John Morgan and Jon Johnson were responding to a call on June 23, 2014, when police say a car pulled out in front of them. The driver of the car was killed, while Morgan and Johnson were severely injured.

"I can remember bits and pieces of it--my partner saying 'look out' as the car pulled out in front of us," Morgan said while at a fundraiser Sunday.

Metro EMS officials say Morgan took the brunt of the impact from the crash, and that it took around an hour to free him from the ambulance.

"When we first got there, John Morgan looked pretty bad off," said colleague Ben Neal. "We weren't sure he would make it through the night."

In the months that followed the accident, an infection in Morgan's right leg forced an amputation. He's been living in a rehab facility ever since being released from the hospital in July.

"I lost track when they passed 30 surgeries on me from the time of the accident," he said. "I've got at least one more to go through."

Both men remain on medical leave, and although they have insurance, bills are mounting.

"Right now, I don't have an idea of how much hundreds of thousands have gone into medical costs along the way," said Morgan.

Over the past several months, Metro EMS employees have embraced Morgan and Johnson, holding multiple fundraisers to ease the financial burden. Sunday, it was a percentage of sales at a Loui Loui's restaurant in Jeffersontown.

"It's just us giving back to them because they've made a great sacrifice for this community. And they've represented us well," said Neal.

Morgan is waiting on a prosthetic leg. He hopes to be fitted and walking around well enough to be released from the rehab facility by Christmas. Although he knows it will be difficult, he says he eventually plans to get his job back as an EMT.

"It's all I've done for a better part of a decade, and it's all I know to do," said Morgan.
