LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several people with loved ones buried at Green Meadows Memorial Cemetery spent the beginning of their week checking on gravesites after concerns surfaced on social media about damaged headstones and deteriorating conditions.
Videos posted online showed headstones separated from its base and on the ground.
Yusef Bibb, who has multiple relatives and friends buried at the cemetery, came to assess the situation first-hand.
“We want to make sure that it’s upkept, it’s taken care of,” Bibb said.
While he found the headstones of his loved ones intact, he noticed some were slightly uneven.
However, other areas of the cemetery told a different story.
Plots near a creek were covered in mud, with at least one headstone partially buried. There were also large holes in the grass and other disturbances, like tire marks between plots.
Cemetery Director Jonathan Harris attributed the damage to recent winter weather.
“Anytime you have ice and it’s melting, it causes problems. It causes issues with some headstones,” Harris said.
He confirmed that two headstones had fallen and promised to rectify the situation.
However, maintenance crews are unable to fully address the issues until the ground dries.
“We cannot get into the cemetery to do maintenance right now. It’s too muddy,” Harris said. “Once we get some dry time, we’ll be able to correct some of the issues.”
Harris encouraged anyone with concerns to contact the Green Meadows office. The cemetery is located at 3800 Shanks Lane.
Bibb said they will continue to hold the cemetery to high standards.
"Even though they're not here, we still want to make sure that this is a sacred burial area," Bibb said.
