LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An early-morning fire in east Louisville displaced more than 20 residents and left 10 units uninhabitable, fire officials said.
According to a news release Monday from Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS, crews were alerted to the fire at the multi-unit apartments in the 10000 block of Summit Park Place, near the intersection of U.S. 22 and Chamberlain Lane, just before 12:30 a.m. Monday.Â
Firefighters arrived within four minutes and found heavy flames coming from the central portion of the second and third floors, as well as the attic, according to the release. Crews immediately began fire suppression and search-and-rescue operations, but no one was found.Â
Because of the volume of fire and concerns about the number of people inside the building, a second alarm was requested, bringing additional units from St. Matthews and Pewee Valley.
The fire caused heavy damage to three apartments and smoke and water damage to several adjacent units. Utilities were shut off to the building, leaving 10 apartments uninhabitable. More than 20 residents were displaced and are working with apartment management to find temporary housing. The American Red Cross is assisting.
Eight occupants reported minor smoke inhalation but declined medical treatment.
Despite frigid temperatures and icy conditions, firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading beyond the initial units involved. About 50 firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene. It took approximately 40 minutes to bring the fire under control.
Investigators said the fire caused by discarded cigarette butts that ignited a flowerpot on an apartment balcony.
