LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — Mayor Craig Greenberg is asking Gov. Andy Beshear to again extend Kentucky’s 10-cent-per-gallon gas tax reduction, saying Louisville drivers are particularly affected due to the shutdown of Interstate 65.

Earlier this month, Louisville was among 33 Kentucky cities and counties granted an extension of the gas tax relief after local leaders requested it. Now, Greenberg is pushing for the tax reduction to remain in place through July 31.

Greenberg said the interstate closure is forcing many commuters to spend more time in traffic, drive extra miles and spend more money on fuel.

"We’re faced with the I-65 shutdown, which means additional commute times and traffic and miles that are put on Louisville families’ cars, which costs more money to fill up their tank," Greenberg said.

The mayor said extending the tax reduction would offer temporary relief for families already facing higher costs for everyday essentials.

The request also comes as some people question whether extending the gas tax break could reduce funding for future road and infrastructure projects.

But Greenberg pushed back on those concerns, pointing to recent state investment in Jefferson County, which received $700 million for road and infrastructure improvements. He said the short-term impact of another month of tax relief would be minimal compared to that broader investment.

Greenberg said he plans to continue urging Beshear to approve an additional month of gas tax relief.
