Old Louisville Fire

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Fire crews battled an early-morning fire Monday on South 4th Street near Central Park in Old Louisville.

Louisville Fire Capt. Donovan Sims said firefighters were on scene 2 minutes after the initial call came in to find smoke billowing from the three-story house near South 4th Street and Magnolia Avenue.

The flames shot high in the air, with smoke visible from miles away in southern Indiana.

Eight minutes after arriving, Sims said it was upgraded to a two-alarm fire, and a second unit was brought in to help get the fire under control. But even with the extra help, Sims said there was a "partial collapse."

It's unclear which floor the fire started on, but Sims said the fourth floor (attic area), third floor and a portion of the roof collapsed onto the second floor, "significantly impacting the structure."

Due to the extent of the damage and concerns about the structural stability of the building, Sims said "it is likely a cause determination will not be possible."

"The amount of damage and safety risks prevent investigators from conducting an in-depth examination of the collapsed area," he said.

Louisville firefighters and the city's arson team were on scene Monday investigating.

No one was injured, Sims said.
