LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- For the first time, there's a National Concussion Protocol for Jockeys.
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority recommended the protocol Thursday for racetracks under its jurisdiction.
HISA's protocol includes step-by-step instructions for racetrack medical staff to follow when evaluating riders for head injuries. It includes digital concussion management to document evaluations.
HISA's national medical director said the concussion protocol is necessary for jockeys to get the chance to make a full recovery.
