Many homeowners find loose or cracked tiles on bathroom walls. This is something you should immediately. A damaged tile can allow moisture from the air in the bathroom to get under the tiled surface, softening the wall behind it and potentially causing mildew and/or more loose tiles. The Home Depot's Scott Krueger and Joe Autry can show you the simple steps to replacing broken tiles and how those same skills can help you replace a soap dish.
Things You'll Need:
Grout saw (small, square blade)
Sharp chisel
Hammer
Replacement tiles, if necessary
Thin-set mortar
Putty knife
Grout
Grout float (rubber trowel)
Sponge
1: Remove the grout from around each damaged tile using your tile saw. Remove it by scraping the blade of the saw back and forth over the grout, working your way down into the lines. Don't scratch the surrounding tiles.
2: Set the tip of a sharp chisel against the base of a tile that needs to come out so the chisel is sitting in the opened grout line. Tap at the chisel with a hammer, moving it to different parts of the tile to gradually loosen it. Continue until the tile pops out. Blow away the dust and debris from the opening. Repeat for each affected tile.
3: Spread thin-set mortar over the back of a replacement tile, making the mortar about 1/8-inch thick. Press the tile into the opening, making sure to properly space it with the surrounding tiles. Repeat for each new tile. (Note: If the old tiles were loose but not damaged, you can reset the same tiles instead of installing different ones.)
4: Let the mortar set overnight.
5 : Spread grout over the new tiles, using the grout float to press the grout into the lines between them. Let the grout sit for 10 minutes in the lines, then wipe the excess grout off the tile face using a dampened sponge.
