Several residents told WDRB News on Friday they didn't know demolition was starting. Many have not been able to get back inside to look for belongings, and cars remain trapped under the building.
Freddy Calderon is a med student at UofL, and lived in the apartment for eight months.
The building caught fire Monday morning and was deemed structurally unsafe on Tuesday.
"Really sad, moving from another state to here and dealing with this transition is a big thing for me," Calderon said. "I saw they were demolishing the building and honestly, it broke my heart to see people grabbing things."
After the fire, Calderon said he was able to grab a 3D print of him graduating. He said it's his motivation to work hard every day. His sister was with him Friday, and said they'd been looking for a new apartment.
"We actually just drove by," Candy Calderon said. "We've been looking this whole week for apartments for him, helping him out, and we just drove by and saw them starting to tear it down."
