LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana Gov. Mike Braun ordered candy and soft drinks be removed from SNAP benefits.
It was one of nine executive orders by the Republican governor issued to "make Indiana healthy again." Two other orders overhaul work requirements and reinstate income and asset verification for SNAP, formerly known as food stamps.
Other executive orders address food transparency about food dyes, creates a study of diet-related chronic illnesses, increase access to farm-to-table foods, create a School Fitness Month and cut down on eligibility errors in the Medicaid program.
"The goal is to empower Hoosiers to address root causes of chronic illness with preventions, nutrition, fitness, physical activity and early screening," Braun said.
Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Medicare administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz joined Braun for the announcement Tuesday.
