LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WTHI) — Indiana’s demand for electricity is rising as data centers, artificial intelligence and manufacturing continue to grow. Gov. Mike Braun is looking to nuclear energy to help keep up.
Braun is pushing Indiana to explore small modular reactors, or SMRs, as the state looks for reliable ways to produce more electricity.
Unlike traditional nuclear plants, SMRs are designed to be built in smaller sections. Supporters say that could make them less expensive and easier to bring online while providing steady power without greenhouse gas emissions.
The technology still faces questions over cost, waste storage and how quickly SMRs can be deployed.
Braun said Indiana needs to move quickly as electricity demand grows, and he hopes the state can be among the first to successfully develop the technology.
