LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An investigation is underway after a person died while Louisville Solid Waste Management employees were cleaning an alley.

A spokesperson for Louisville Metro Public Works said it happened Thursday in the 2500 block of Cedar Street near 26th Street during a routine alley cleanup. The spokesperson said alley cleanup regularly happens hundreds of times a day across the city.

Louisville Metro Police Spokesperson Adam Sears said they were notified of a person down in the area of 26th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard about 9 a.m. Thursday. Police initially said it appeared the woman was having a medical issue, and that LMPD's Homicide Unit is investigating.

Then, on Friday, Louisville Police said they are investigating the death of a woman who sustained injuries "from contact with equipment on a garbage truck." Because a city vehicle was involved, LMPD's Public Integrity Unit is investigating.

The Public Works employees involved were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure.
