LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Jefferson County Board of Education appointed Dr. Keith Look to serve as the district's new at-large board member, following a special meeting where board members interviewed nine applicants for the vacant position.
The board met in closed session for three hours Monday, interviewing candidates before announcing the decision.
"Look brings new perspective, educational experience, and a commitment to serving the students, families, and employees of Jefferson County Public Schools," said Board Chair Dr. Corrie Shull. "We appreciate every applicant who participated in this process and shared a willingness to serve our community."
Look will step into the seat held by James Craig, who resigned before the end of his term. Craig represented District 3 for eight years.
Background in JCPS
Look is a JCPS graduate, parent and former administrator. He cited that background as a key asset for guiding the board and superintendent through upcoming state-mandated structural reforms. He said his national education and workforce experience will bring a forward-looking vision to the district as it prepares its next strategic plan.
"I think it's a great choice," Yearwood said.
Look previously served as principal at Meyzeek Middle School from 2003 to 2008 and at Shawnee High School until 2013. He also served as superintendent of Danville Independent School District. Look applied for the superintendent position after former superintendent Marty Pollio left. That job was filed by Brian Yearwood.Â
"He is deeply concerned about the welfare of students, the safety of students, and that's extremely impressive," Yearwood said.
Look currently serves as an executive coach with the St. Louis University School of Education.
He holds a Doctorate of Education in Education Policy & Practice and a Master of Education in Leadership in Professional Education, both from the University of Pennsylvania.
Role and responsibilities
As an at-large board member, Look will help set policies that govern the district, join fellow board members in evaluating the superintendent, and participate in decisions involving the district budget, operations and educational priorities.
"As a former Kentucky superintendent, I understand the demands from the broad array of constituents as well as the myriad of tasks it takes simply to run a district and advance its financial sustainability, facility development, and student achievement," Look said in his application.
Statement from Look
"As a JCPS administrator, I signed every correspondence with the African proverb, 'We lift as we climb,'" Look said. "In the interim at-large role, I strive to continue that same pursuit for all of JCPS, from Portland to Prospect, from Shawnee to Shively."
Look was not present to be sworn in Monday. A date for that ceremony has not been given. He will serve a shortened term that expires in December.
