LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Department of Education has a new interim commissioner.
At a special meeting on Thursday, the Kentucky Board of Education named Robin Fields Kinney as the new interim state commissioner of education, according to a news release.
“The board is confident in Robin’s dedication to public education and her experience in KDE,” KBE Chair Sharon Porter Robinson said in a news release. “She will serve our state well during her tenure as interim commissioner. We appreciate her willingness to take on this important role, and we look forward to her leadership as we continue our mission to provide the best education for Kentucky's students."
Fields Kinney, who is currently associate commissioner of the Office of Finance and Operations for KDE, will step into her new role on Sept. 30. Her annual salary is $260,000, and she is not eligible for the job as permanent commissioner.
“I'm honored to serve in this capacity until the board is able to select a new permanent commissioner,” she said. “My goal will be to make sure the initiatives of the board and the agency continue on through this transitional period. I look forward to working alongside Team KDE as we continue to support our schools and districts.”
The current state education commissioner, Jason Glass, announced on July 31 he would be stepping down as of Sept. 29.
The board has issued a request for proposals for a national search firm to look for a new state education commissioner. Proposals can be submitted until Sept. 25 here. The board hopes to have the firm start its search by Dec. 1.
