LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- What started as a routine workday quickly turned into a rescue that saved a life.

Anchorage-Middletown Fire & EMS will honor Keith Ware with the department’s Meritorious Service Medal during an appreciation luncheon Tuesday.

Ware, a sanitation truck driver, played a critical role in a confined space rescue on June 5, 2025 — before first responders arrived.

While on his collection route, Ware heard a faint cry for help and stopped to investigate. He discovered an open MSD well and made contact with a person trapped below ground.

Ware immediately called 911, stayed on scene, and provided key details to dispatchers and responding crews — actions fire officials said helped lead to a successful rescue.

Fire officials said Ware’s awareness and willingness to act made all the difference.
