LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife wants to prepare hunters for the upcoming season.

The state's fall hunting season begins mid-August, and the department is hosting a Hunter Education Day to make sure new hunters are safe and successful.

The department is hosting 20 in-person Hunter Education classes and live-fire range days throughout Kentucky on Aug. 2. The classes are for those at least 9 years old and are free, but registration is required. To register, click here. Registered participants will be provided necessary equipment at no charge.

In the class, hunters will learn about hunter ethics, wildlife conservation and identification, field care of game, first aid, firearm safety, archery and muzzleloading. The in-person class will have a written test and live-fire exercise. There are also online hunter education classes, but some may require a fee as they are offered by other organizations. For the online class, the live-fire exercise will be at a later date.

In Kentucky, to legally hunt, all hunters born on or after January 1, 1975, must complete a one-time hunter education course, and carry proof of completed class. Completed hunters education classes in another state are accepted in Kentucky.

Hunters must also have an unexpired hunting license appropriate for their hunting activity. Species-specific permits are needed for deer, wild turkeys, bear, bobcats and sandhill cranes in addition to an annual hunting license. To purchase a license or permit, click here.
