LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Lottery players have won $1.5 billion over the past year.
In fiscal year ending June 30, the Kentucky Lottery said it also generated more than $2 billion in sales, a 14% increase from the previous year.
Lottery officials said in a news release Tuesday that it transferred more than $404 million to the state to help fund scholarships and grants for Kentucky students. Officials said one in five Kentuckiana students received a scholarship or grant funded by the lottery.
"What is most special about this accomplishment is that we generated even more money to fund higher education in every part of the state," Mary Harville, president and CEO of the Kentucky Lottery, said in a news release Tuesday. "The scholarships and grants we fund are important because they encourage Kentucky students to stay in Kentucky, to go to school and eventually make their homes right here in the state."
Since 1999, lottery officials said $5 billion in scholarships and grants have been funded.
