LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Nearly 120 guns were found at TSA checkpoints inside Kentucky airports in 2023.

All the guns seized — which matched a record high — were found by TSA officers during routine screenings of carry-ons at airport security checkpoints, a regional spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration said in a news release Friday.

Of the 119 found state-wide:

  • 54 were found at the Cincinnati-North Kentucky International Airport
  • 49 were found at the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport
  • 16 were found at the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington

Statewide in 2023, TSA screened approximately 8.15 million departing travelers at the five commercial Kentucky airports, a 12.7% increase over 2022.

Nationwide, TSA found a firearm in one in 127,447 passengers screened. In Kentucky, that rate was nearly doubled, to one in every 68,627 passengers.
