LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky officials announced on Thursday the state's first reported deaths from respiratory viruses this winter.
Officials said Thursday that two children have died, one from influenza and the other from COVID-19. Officials said neither child had been immunized against the viruses that caused their deaths.
“Influenza and COVID-19 are serious illnesses that unfortunately can be deadly for some people, including young children,” Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Department for Public Health, said in a news release. “It is important for people who have not been vaccinated to get their updated influenza and COVID-19 vaccines this season, along with other recommended immunizations, to protect themselves.”
It is unknown where in the state the children lived.
Respiratory illnesses like influenza, COVID-19 and RSV are widespread in the state, and cases have been trending upward for five consecutive weeks.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends those 6 months old and older get the flu and COVID-19 vaccines every year, especially those who are at high risk for complications.
Health officials recommend good health habits like proper hand washing with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when you're sick.
