LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky Fish and Wildlife confirmed a new case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a wild deer in Ballard County. It is the state’s third wild deer case and the second in Ballard County.
The infected deer was harvested Nov. 16. Tests confirmed the always-fatal neurological disease that is caused by prions, proteins that can survive in the environment for years.
CWD affects deer, elk and other members of the deer family. While there’s no evidence it spreads to humans, the CDC advises against eating meat from infected animals.
Ballard County and surrounding areas are already in Kentucky’s CWD surveillance zone, so no changes to hunting rules are expected.
"Our team continues to monitor the health of the state’s deer herd," said Ben Robinson, director of the Wildlife Division, in a news release.
