LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Drivers who ignore stopped school buses could soon face stricter consequences under a bill gaining momentum in Kentucky.

House Bill 7, which would allow cameras on school buses to catch illegal passers, has cleared a Senate committee with unanimous support after already passing the House.

If approved, police would review bus camera footage, confirm violations and contact drivers directly. First-time offenders would face a $300 fine, while repeat violations would jump to $500, with funds going toward maintaining the camera systems.

For school bus drivers, the danger is nothing new. Many said drivers speed past stopped buses every day, putting children at risk.

Supporters said the measure is about one thing: safety.

The bill now heads to the Senate floor, where it’s expected to pass and move one step closer to becoming law.
