LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky will open more than 1,500 new appointments Friday afternoon for 15-year-olds to take their written driver permit test.

The appointments for a statewide event scheduled for Saturday, May 17, open Friday at 1 p.m. on the Kentucky State Police online scheduling portal, according to a news release. The appoints for May 17 are open to all residents needing to take a written permit test.

Appointments will be available at 20 testing locations across the state for the May 17 event. Applicants can select a time and location that suits their schedule. Tests can also be taken in any county offered that day.

Before taking the written permit test with the Kentucky State Police, applicants should do the following:

  • Gather required documentation, such as a birth certificate (not a photocopy), proof of Social Security number and a School Compliance Verification Form. To see a full list of documents, click here.
  • Study the Kentucky Driver Manual. To view the manual, click here.

KSP encourages applicants to gather the required documents ready to go before signing up for an appointment to "ensure a smooth signup process and reduce wait times" on May 17.

This comes as the state deals with a backlog of testing and appointments at its regional driver's license offices.

Gov. Andy Beshear signed House Bill 15 into law in March, allowing 15-year-olds to get their driver's permits.
