LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky U.S. Sen. Rand Paul visited the Summit Wellness Center in Louisville on Monday morning, a facility dedicated to supporting the total wellness of first responders in the area.
The multi-story facility — which used to be the Humana Gym — is located at 601 Presidents Blvd., just off Eastern Parkway and blocks east of U of L's Belknap campus. The wellness center used to be the Humana Gym. In 2019, the University of Louisville opted to close its employee fitness center to save $1 million a year.
Opened last October, the center addresses physical, mental, spiritual, social, and financial health for the Louisville Metro Police Department.
"I'm proud of the police foundation and the community that steps up to give money to the police foundation to support this," Paul said Monday in Louisville.
The center features a basketball court, indoor walking track, weight equipment and locker rooms. When it opened, LMPD planned to also to have three full-time mental health counselors along with a specific room dedicated to meditation.
"We are here to take care of people that take care of people and we need officers that are healthy — physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally," LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said. "... I'm hoping — not only here in Louisville but across the country — there will be a national trend of talking about wellness."
