Law enforcement prepares for KKK rally in southern Indiana

MADISON, Ind. (WDRB) – A Ku Klux Klan group has a rally planned for Saturday in Madison amid other Labor Day weekend activities.

Not only is there a KKK rally, but counter-protesters will also hold a rally of their own. And completely separate from those events, there will also be car show called Rock in’ on the River from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A group of white supremacists called the Honorable Sacred Knights of the Ku Klux Klan has reserved Jaycee Park in Madison right on the Ohio River. The group is calling the event a "Ku Klux Lookout." That event goes from 1-3 p.m.

A counter-group will also be demonstrating. They’ll meet at the same park and then march to their own gathering at a different park about a mile away.

Madison Police, Hanover Police, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police have all been working together on a plan.

“We do have a plan in place with all those agencies to ensure the safety of the public, ensure the safety of the people in the event and the counter-protesters that have also signed up,” Madison Police Chief Jeremy Perkins said.

Police do not want to give out specifics of the plan, but his is the third time officers have dealt with a KKK event in Madison.

Perkins said it’s been safe without any problems the two previous times.
