LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky State University could be facing one of the biggest transformations in its history.

Senate Bill 185 would reshape the university into a polytechnic institution, shifting its focus toward STEM education and workforce-driven programs over the next five years.

Lawmakers backing the measure said the goal is to strengthen the university’s future and improve outcomes, while also responding to ongoing concerns about campus safety and performance.

The discussion comes after a deadly campus shooting last December and a separate recent arrest involving a student and a weapon.

Supporters of the bill said the plan is not about closing the school, but redefining its mission.

The proposal would also raise admission standards and give university leadership broad authority to guide staffing and structural changes during the transition period.

Although critics raised concerns about the pace and scale of the overhaul, the bill cleared committee and now moves to the full Kentucky Senate for consideration.
