LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After months of planning to roll out community kiosks aimed at providing fresh food to underserved communities in west Louisville, a local nonprofit is seeing the fruits of its labor.

Change Today, Change Tomorrow, which was founded in 2019 to give back to those neighborhoods, established the kiosks as as way to bring fresh produce and meat to parts of west Louisville long classified as a food desert. Many west Louisville residents have faced having to travel outside of their neighborhoods to get the quality food.

Marea Crosby said she doesn't drive, so she was able to walk across the street from her home on Wednesday to get groceries. She walked home with spinach, roast beef, potatoes, avocados, bread and even flowers for her home.

"It's right across the street from me," she said. "That's wonderful."

Documentation isn't required, so anyone can just show up and fill up a box or bag with groceries.

"These people are hungry, and they need healthy food to sustain them," said Icyreen Ford with CTCT. "People could just walk down the street and get their fresh groceries."

One in three west Louisville residents live in a food desert, so Ford hopes these pop-ups make fresh food more accessible.

"We have two Krogers in the west end and over 60,000 residents, meaning 30,000 people are sharing one Kroger," Ford said. "And that is just not sustainable."

CTCT will hand out groceries and flowers at these events at noon every Tuesday through Thursday:

  • Tuesdays around 12 p.m. at New Leaf Clinic, 215 W. Breckinridge St.
  • Wednesdays around 12 p.m. at 2234 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.
  • Thursdays around 12 p.m. Alberta O. Jones Park at 23rd and Maple streets

While the kiosks are currently only in Old Louisville and the Russell and California neighborhoods, CTCT plans to expand into all west Louisville communities. And Crosby hopes to see more of her neighbors taking advantage of the opportunity next week.

"We may not have a lot, but this adds to what we have," she said.
