LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A gathering was held Tuesday on Veterans Day to honor those who served and to protect their legacy.
The Petersburg-Newburg Cemetery was established in 1833 and has a long history of veterans who contributed to both local and national history.
The historic African American burial ground has about 100 soldiers resting there.
The community came together to honor them and thank them for their service. The Color Guard from Central High School was present for the presentation of colors.
The names of the veterans buried in the cemetery were also read aloud.
“We need to come together and still be the same Army we were in the Army, but out here in civilian life as an Army and fight for what belongs to us as veterans,” Renee King, with the Petersburg-Newburg Cemetery, said.
Due to inclement weather, the event was held at Forest Baptist Church down the street from the cemetery.
