LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new set of tennis courts is ready for visitors in Louisville's south end.

City leaders cut the ribbon Tuesday on new, state-of-the-art tennis courts at the Southwest Community Center off Dixie Highway. It's part of a major push to invest in parks and green spaces across Metro Louisville, particularly in underserved neighborhoods.

"World-class cities have world-class parks," Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said. "They make our neighborhoods safer, more vibrant and create a safer, stronger and healthier city."

The courts symbolize more than recreation, representing renewal of community and a stronger future for the south end, according to city officials.

"We are excited for what's to come in the south end and we are grateful for these state-of-the-art tennis facilities," said Louisville Metro Councilman Jonathan Joseph, R-12.

The tennis courts are part of more than $10 million in ongoing investments to upgrade parks and recreation across the city. According to a news release, Louisville has completed a number of projects at parks including:

  • A new pool at Algonquin Park
  • Walking paths, fishing spots, grills, picnic tables, pavilion and nature-themed playgrounds at the Tom Wallace area of Jefferson Memorial Forest
  • Opening of the new Nick Rodman Legacy Park, which includes a playground, spray ground, walking path and restroom building
  • New restroom buildings Long Run Park and Sun Valley Park
  • New tennis and pickleball courts at Fern Creek Park
  • New tennis courts at Southwest Government Center
  • A new pavilion at Riverside
