LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With kids and even adults wanting to play in the snow, the extreme cold means it can turn dangerous quickly.

So Louisville doctors are reminding parents to keep an eye on their kids if they plan to be outside. The risk of hypothermia and frostbite increases, and many kids won't say if they're too cold.

"Keep an eye on children," said Dr. Naomi Warnick with Norton Women's & Children's Hospital. "Set a time limit outside for 20 minutes. Warm up and go back outside later so they can keep having fun and make sure they're staying safe."

Doctors said to watch for shivering, pale skins and tingling or numbness. If it doesn't go away when going inside to get warm, seek help.

"Hypothermia and frostbite can set in these temps quickly — within an hour," said Dr. Thomas Cunningham with Norton Women's & Children's Hospital. So be vigilant and be aware of your body. Seek shelter at first sign of pain or numbness or difficulty performing tasks outside."

If you do plan to be outside, doctors encourage you to dress in layers, wear gloves and a hat and a few layers of socks.
