LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Kentucky bill aims to require a background check from prospective gun owners, creating a five-day waiting period.
House Bill 696 was filed Monday by Rep. Daniel Grossberg, D-Louisville. In it, he cited studies showing a five-day waiting period could reduce homicides by 17% and suicides by 11% by creating a buffer between a possible crisis and possession of a gun.
"When I look at that, I think that should be a no-brainer," Grossberg said. "It's five days. When we think about immediate gratification, how much immediate gratification does someone need?"
But opponents said it's important for someone who feels like they're in immediate danger to be able to buy a gun quickly."
"If you feel like you need a firearm, you should be able to obtain it quickly if you're a law-abiding citizen," said Jay Evans, the owner of Evans Firearms and Archery in Lexington.
One bill supporter also referenced the note left behind by the Old National Bank shooter, who said it was remarkably easy to buy the gun he used in the shooting.
