LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There's a new way to turn the page as the Louisville Free Public Library takes its shelves on the road.

City leaders unveiled a brand new bookmobile Friday. The rolling library is designed to deliver books and resources straight to the people who need them most.

From care facilities and housing complexes, to shelters and neighborhood events, the mobile unit will help remove barriers to access. There are also plans to make regular stops across Jefferson County.

Mayor Craig Greenberg said being married to a longtime educator helps him understand the importance of bringing knowledge, entertainment and opportunity to every corner of the city.

"Rachel is a teacher and as a mother and a teacher, we have just seen the importance of reading and what it does for kids and what it can do for adults," Greenberg said Friday. "And both of us today still try to read as much as possible to expand our horizons. Whether it's for a job, entertainment or enrichment purposes. Reading is so important."

The new bookmobile was funded by a $250,000 budget allocation from Greenberg and Metro Council, with $116,000 from the Library Foundation. The funding included $20,000 for new books and materials.
