LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville's Belvedere could be getting a major makeover.
From outdoor concerts to annual festivals, the elevated event space on the riverfront between 4th and 6th streets in downtown Louisville hosts dozens of events every year.
Because it's more than 50 years old, Mayor Craig Greenberg wants to invest $20 million into redesigning the space.
Whether it's for lunch or a weekend event, the Belvedere is still a popular destination for many who live in and around Louisville.
"I still like the Belvedere," said Rachel McDowell. "I think it's cool."
Rachel McDowell and Sean McDowell said they enjoy events on the Belvedere like the annual Worldfest.Â
Greenberg is asking for the funding from state lawmakers to redesign the space. The renovation plan was included in his 2024 General Assembly Agenda, which he released Wednesday.
"Just a few blocks from here, down 5th Street, we have another amazing opportunity for the city, one that will beautifully compliment Waterfront Park," Greenberg said Wednesday. "I can't wait to reveal how we can completely transform the Belvedere and turn it into something really special. I think it will blow your mind."
For now, the mayor isn't showing off the plans.Â
Kentucky Rep. Jason Nemes, R-33, admits that he and Greenberg are on opposite sides of a lot of issues, but they're on the same page when it comes to the mayor's agenda for Metro Louisville.
"He's got his role, I've got my role, but they are the same in that we are supposed to help improve the lives of people who live in Louisville and that's what I'm going to do," said Nemes.
The upgrades could improve annual events held at the Belvedere, such as Worldfest, Thunder Over Louisville and the Juneteenth Festival. There may also be room for public opinion on what they'd like to see.
"Maybe like, more green space or something, it's kind of like all concrete, or maybe more of a park feel," said McDowell.
The plans are far from a done deal, but so far it has bipartisan support in Louisville and in Frankfort.Â
